Vancouver decks take rain, UV, moss, and heavy use for nine months a year. Skye Blue Construction builds cedar, composite, and rooftop decks — including waterproof membrane systems for above-grade living space — across Vancouver and the Lower Mainland.
Vancouver's mild climate means decks get used almost year-round, which means they need to perform. We build residential decks in three categories: ground-level and low-elevation (typically cedar or pressure-treated framing, cedar or composite decking); mid-elevation (same as above plus railings and stairs to code); and above-grade rooftop or balcony decks (which require a waterproof membrane and a structural detail that protects the living space below).
For cedar decking, we use kiln-dried Western Red Cedar, 5/4 x 6 or 2 x 6 profiles, with proper clearances, ventilation, and stainless or hot-dip galvanized hardware. Cedar is the traditional Vancouver deck material — beautiful, repairable, and naturally rot-resistant. Trade-off: maintenance every 2–3 years.
For composite decking, we install Trex (Transcend, Lineage), TimberTech (Azek), and Fiberon. Composite handles Vancouver rain without rot or splinters and doesn't need sealing. Trade-off: hotter in direct sun, harder to repair, and more expensive upfront.
For above-grade decks that drain to a finished living space below (a common Vancouver condo and townhouse scenario), we install a proper waterproof membrane — typically a hot-applied rubberized asphalt or a cold-applied liquid membrane — with slope to drains, edge metal, and a sacrificial wear surface. This is specialty work that needs an experienced Vancouver deck contractor; failures cause water damage to the unit below and become an insurance claim.
